The first made in Rwanda smartphone has been officially launched.This is the first of its kind in Africa where an entire phone, including its parts are made and assembled.
Rwanda is gradually ebbing its way to becoming a technological giant in Africa and the world as a whole.
The phone was launched by the Mara Group — a pan-African business that is headquartered in Dubai, UAE on the Monday, the 7th of Oct 2019. Two smartphones were launched, Mara X and Mara Z, both of which use android operating system and cost $130 and $190 respectively.
According to Mara Group CEO Ashish Thakkar, their intention is to target people interested in paying more for quality.
Both devices are already available for purchase online or at the Mara Group’s stores in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital.
The Rwandan President, Paul Kagame stated at the official launch that the introduction of Mara Phones will put smartphone ownership within reach of more Rwandans.
As the percentage of Rwandans using smartphones is quite low. He also stated that there are plans to export phones within the region.
